Watching the Alpine Glow
Starting from the village or summit parking area, a wide, gravel path gently climbs toward the summit fire lookout tower. Because the track is well-formed and short, it is accessible for hikers of varying fitness levels, making it ideal for a relaxed evening stroll after dinner.
As twilight approaches, the landscape shifts through a spectrum of color:
The Golden Hour: Soft golden light illuminates the surrounding snow-gum slopes and highlights the sharp ridge of Mt Feathertop to the north.
The Alpine Glow: As the sun touches the horizon, the sky transitions into shades of deep orange, pink, and violet, casting long shadows across the valley floors below.
The Stars Above: With zero light pollution, staying a few extra minutes at the peak reveals a dazzling canopy of stars across the high-altitude night sky.
Photography notes from High Country travel experts highlight the location's appeal:
"The summit of Hotham offers one of the most accessible 360-degree sunset panoramas in Australia, where the fading light transforms the jagged blue ridges of the Victorian Alps into a painter’s palette." — Alpine Australia Photography Journal
Evening Traditions on the Peak
For Rowan Wilde and fellow club members, a twilight trip up to the summit is a cherished mountain routine whenever friends and family gather at Hotham.
"Watching the sunset from the summit on a clear evening is something special," shares Rowan Wilde, Langi-Taan Ski Club Secretary. "My family, friends, and fellow club members make a point of heading up there whenever the weather is clear. It’s remarkably peaceful standing at the highest point on the mountain, watching the sun drop below the horizon. After the sun has gone down, it’s just a short little trip back down to Langi-Taan to pour a glass of wine and relax by the fire in our great room."
Essential Twilight Tips
To make the most of your sunset summit walk, remember that high-country temperatures fall quickly once the sun dips:
Pack Layers: Bring windproof jackets, beanies, and warm layers even on warm summer days.
Bring Headlamps: While the climb up is done in daylight, carrying torches or headlamps ensures a safe walk back down.
Camera Gear: A tripod or steady camera rest will help capture the rich colors of the alpine sky.
