A multi-use alpine trail connecting Mt Hotham and Dinner Plain. Perfect for walking clubs seeking flexible distances, gentle gradients, and hut stops.

Not every club excursion requires 20 kilometres of steep ridge scrambles or heavy elevation gains. For mixed-fitness groups, social walking clubs, or multi-day trips requiring an accessible "warm-up" day, the Brabralung Trail offers a flexible, beautifully formed track connecting Hotham Village directly to the alpine village of Dinner Plain.

Route Highlights and Flexible Group Itineraries

Named in honor of the traditional Taungurung and Gunaikurnai Indigenous connections to the high country, the Brabralung Trail winds through magnificent snow gum woodlands, pristine montane peatlands, and historical cattle-grazing plains.

The key advantage of the Brabralung Trail for group leaders is its incredible versatility:

  1. One-Way Village-to-Village Walk (13.3 km): Walk from Hotham to Dinner Plain, stop at a local cafe or pub for lunch, and utilize a pre-arranged car shuffle or shuttle bus to return to Hotham.

  2. Intermediate Point Turnarounds: The trail parallels the Great Alpine Road at a safe distance, offering multiple access points (such as Wire Plain or JB Plain) to shorten the walk for members needing a lighter day.

  3. Full Return Challenge (26.6 km): A solid endurance test for fitter members seeking distance without extreme technical terrain.

Key Points of Interest Along the Trail

Wire Plain & Mistake Creek

Departing Hotham Village, the trail meanders through Wire Plain, a gentle shelter area surrounded by dense stands of Eucalyptus pauciflora (Snow Gums). In summer, the canopy provides welcome shade, and the understory comes alive with native birdlife, including Crimson Rosellas and Flame Robins.

JB Plain & Historic Hut

Located roughly halfway between Hotham and Dinner Plain, JB Plain is a classic high-country clearing. It features a historic timber cattlemen’s hut, established camping facilities, and undercover picnic tables. It serves as an ideal rest stop for group leaders to conduct headcounts, distribute snacks, and allow hikers to soak in the serene alpine atmosphere.

The official Ride & Walk High Country guide details the trail’s broad appeal:

"The trail is well-maintained... inviting exploration into surrounding bushland with scenic views across the High Country without extreme steepness." — Victoria's High Country Trail Directory

Managing Mixed-Ability Groups in the High Country

One of the greatest challenges for walking club organizers is accommodating members with varying fitness levels. The Brabralung Trail solves this problem elegantly. Stronger walkers can push ahead at a brisk pace or complete the full return journey, while social walkers can enjoy a relaxed pace to JB Plain before meeting the rest of the group at Dinner Plain for lunch.

Convenient Club Stays at Langi-Taan

Having a central, comfortable base on the mountain makes managing group dynamics effortless. Instead of packing up camp or commuting from valley towns, staying at Mt Hotham ensures your group can step straight onto the trail.

"Having trails like Brabralung starting right outside the door makes group logistics simple," says Rowan Wilde, Langi-Taan Ski Club Secretary. "Langi-Taan lodge acts as a central hub where walking groups can stay, plan and enjoy great amenities and views while recovering on the days walk and planning the next - our members love our lodge's strong hot showers and we're confident you will too."

Connecting Alpine Communities along the Ridge

The Brabralung Trail provides walking clubs with the ultimate flexible high-country traverse. By offering smooth, wide tracks, gentle gradients, and clear access points at Wire Plain and JB Plain, it removes the steep technical barriers of traditional alpine hiking. Whether your club uses it as a 13 km village-to-village social walk ending in lunch at Dinner Plain or as a longer 26 km return conditioning trek, it remains one of the most accessible and scenic paths across the Hotham plateau.
